We have already published many articles on pets and a large majority (if not all) of them have featured dogs and cats. Today’s post will also be about pets, but this time we’ll focus on much more unusual and unlikely animals, as we’ll show you some of the coolest exotic animals that it’s legal to own.
From tarantulas to freshwater stingrays, wallaroos and alligators, if you want to know which exotic animals are for sale, check out these 25 exotic animals that you could legally own.
Note: Some of the animals featured in this post can only be legally owned in certain US states, as each state has its own laws regarding pet ownership. It is also important to remember that non-domesticated exotic animals have their place in the wild and that keeping them in captivity is usually extremely stressful for them.
- Fennec fox
Resembling both a dog and a cat, the Fennec fox is a very cool little pet to own. The smallest of all foxes in the world, it lives naturally in the Sahara Desert and elsewhere in North Africa. These nocturnal mammals generally eat plants, but also rodents, eggs, reptiles and insects.
- Mexican Redknee Tarantula
Native to Australia, Papua New Guinea and Indonesia, the Sugar Glider is a cute little marsupial. It has become popular as an exotic pet because it is very social and easily bonds with humans. It is best to get two or more Sugar Gliders if you can't be home often to keep them company.
- Chinchilla
Chinchilla is naturally found in the Andes in South America. It is
appreciated for its beautiful soft and luxuriant fur, its curious and noisy
nature and the absence of unpleasant noises. It is a pet that requires little
maintenance, but it is very fragile and can bite when pressed too tightly.
- Freshwater stingray
Although the freshwater stingray looks really cool, and it is certainly
the main attraction of your aquarium, taking care of it is not an easy task.
They need very large aquariums with a huge bottom surface. Rays are also
sensitive to chemistry and water purity, which is why frequent water changes
are essential.
- Sugar Glider
Native to Australia, Papua New Guinea and Indonesia, the Sugar Glider is
a cute little marsupial. It has become popular as an exotic pet because it is
very social and easily bonds with humans. It is best to get two or more Sugar
Gliders if you can't be home often to keep them company.
- Bearded Dragon
Present
in the desert regions of Australia, the bearded dragon is a medium-sized
reptile that can live up to 14 years with good care. Valued for its friendly
and calm nature, the bearded dragon was only introduced to the United States in
the 1990s, but since then these interesting creatures have grown in popularity
considerably and can now be found in most pet stores.
- Striprd skunk
Another
unusual pet for sale, the striped skunk can now be legally owned in 17 American
states such as Florida, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Massachusetts.
Domesticated skunks from which the scent glands have been removed can make
surprisingly docile and affectionate pets, but there is controversy over
surgery as it strips the animal of its natural defenses.
- Capybara
Native to
South America where it lives in savannas and forests near water bodies, the
Capybara is the largest rodent in the world. These curious creatures are
sometimes kept as pets, but they need a lot of time and care, a swimming pool
to swim and fresh, non-toxic grass for grazing.
- Serval
A
medium-sized African wild cat, the serval can be an amazing exotic pet, but
these beautiful felines are not for everyone. Remarkable for their large ears
and their spotted and golden yellow coat, they are very active but also shy and
it will take time and attention from their owner for them to develop a close
bond.
